Full-time schools and educational trajectories: Evidence from high-stakes exams

This paper estimates the effects of extending school day during elementary on students’ educational outcomes later in life. The analysis takes place context a large-scale program introduced 2007 that extended from 4.5 to 8 h Mexico City’s metropolitan area. identification strategy leverages cohort-by-cohort variation full-time enrollment schools. results indicate schools have positive and long-lasting performance, increasing high-stakes high admission test scores by 4.8 percent standard deviation. are larger for females than males. difference between males 2.1 deviation represents 16% gender gap exam. Moreover, schooling decreases probability delays completion.
